The circle of fourths and the circle of fifths show the same chord relationships in opposite directions. Moving by a fifth often creates a strong pull back “home,” which is easy to hear in hymn endings. Moving by a fourth often feels like moving outward to another familiar chord and is common in pop, folk, and country. Both movements appear in many styles, so you do not need to memorize a circle—the recommendations above provide a practical starting point.
Blues: Dominant 7ths with I–IV–V.
Country: Major I–IV–V, V7, minor vi, and suspended chords.
Jazz: Major 7ths, minor 7ths, dominant 7ths, diminished passing chords, and ii–V–I.
Remember: with flats, the second-to-last flat names the key.
Remember: with sharps, the key is one half step above the last sharp.
